With roughly five seconds left and Boston leading 110–109, Philadelphia's Hal Greer tried to inbound the ball. Havlicek anticipated the pass, leaped, and deflected it to teammate Sam Jones. Jones dribbled out the remaining time, preserving the Celtics' one-point victory and sending the team to the NBA Finals.
