Who designed the star logo for the United States Bicentennial celebration of 1976?

The story behind the answer

Bruce Blackburn designed the star logo for the United States Bicentennial celebration of 1976.

Blackburn created a white five-pointed star inside a larger stylized red, white, and blue star. The design was surrounded by the words “American Revolution Bicentennial 1776–1976” and appeared on official materials, flags, postage stamps, tax forms, products, and other memorabilia.

The symbol was introduced before the anniversary itself. One early appearance was on a 1971 commemorative postage stamp, giving the public a recognizable visual identity for the coming celebration.

Blackburn is also known for co-designing NASA’s famous “worm” logotype with Richard Danne in 1974. That connection sometimes causes confusion, since both designs became highly recognizable examples of American graphic design from the same era. The Bicentennial star, however, was Blackburn’s separate contribution to the 1976 observance.
