Henri Matisse designed the stained-glass windows of the Sainte-Marie du Rosaire Chapel in Vence.
Matisse created the Chapel of the Rosary, also called the Vence Chapel, for the Dominican nuns of Vence. He designed its architecture, murals, vestments, furnishings, and stained-glass windows, treating the building as a unified work of art. The chapel was consecrated in 1951.
The windows use a deliberately limited palette of blue, green, and yellow. Their leaf-like and abstract forms project coloured light onto the white interior, creating a calm visual environment rather than a densely narrated medieval programme.
Matisse’s chapel is often discussed alongside the work of other modern artists who designed religious windows, including Marc Chagall and Fernand Léger. It should not be confused with the later stained-glass windows Matisse designed for other projects; Vence is his best-known complete sacred-space commission.
