Joan Vila-Grau designed the stained-glass windows installed in Barcelona’s Sagrada Família during its late-20th-century restoration.
Vila-Grau was a Catalan artist and stained-glass designer who worked on the basilica’s windows from the 1990s. His approach used strong fields of colour and carefully controlled geometry, creating a modern effect while respecting Antoni Gaudí’s architecture. The windows are not simply copies of medieval glazing; they are part of the continuing artistic development of the unfinished church.
The Sagrada Família is frequently associated only with Gaudí, but many later artists and architects have contributed to its completion. Josep Maria Subirachs, for example, created sculpture for the Passion façade, while Vila-Grau was particularly associated with the stained glass.
