Who designed the reverse of the United States Bicentennial quarter?
Answer
Jack L. Ahr
Answer
Jack L. Ahr
Jack L. Ahr designed the reverse of the United States Bicentennial quarter.
Ahr’s design featured a colonial drummer, a torch of victory, and thirteen stars representing the original states. It was selected through a national competition for special Bicentennial reverses on the quarter, half dollar, and dollar.
Seth G. Huntington designed the Independence Hall reverse for the half dollar, while Dennis R. Williams created the Liberty Bell-and-Moon design for the dollar. Mint Chief Engraver Frank Gasparro made later technical changes to the winning designs, but he was not the original designer of the quarter reverse.
The Bicentennial quarter was released as a circulating coin, so the design reached far more people than a limited commemorative issue might have. Its obverse retained the familiar portrait of George Washington, while the reverse supplied the special anniversary imagery.
