Dennis R. Williams designed the reverse of the 1976 United States Bicentennial dollar showing the Liberty Bell and Moon.
Williams was a 22-year-old art student when his design won the public competition for the dollar. The reverse places the Liberty Bell over a lunar image, combining a symbol of American independence with the space-age imagery associated with the Apollo era. The coin retained Dwight D. Eisenhower's portrait on the obverse.
Mint Chief Engraver Frank Gasparro made technical changes before production, but Williams was the credited designer. The coin was issued with the dual date 1776–1976. This design should not be confused with the regular Eisenhower dollar reverse, which honored Apollo 11 with an eagle landing on the Moon.
