Who designed the original Pikachu character?

Atsuko Nishida designed the original Pikachu character.

Nishida created Pikachu at the request of lead designer Ken Sugimori during development of the first Pokémon games. Her initial concept combined a mouse-like body with the distinctive yellow color, pointed ears, and electricity-themed tail that became central to the character’s identity.

Ken Sugimori finalized the artwork used for the games and promotional materials, which is why he is sometimes incorrectly credited as Pikachu’s sole designer. The character’s final look reflects collaboration between Nishida’s original design and Sugimori’s finalized illustrations.

Pikachu was originally one species among the 151 Pokémon in the first generation, but its role changed dramatically after it became Ash Ketchum’s companion in the anime. That exposure made Pikachu the franchise mascot and one of the most recognizable fictional characters in the world. Pichu and several alternate forms were added in later generations, but the original species remains Electric-type.
