Who designed the official logo for the 1976 United States Bicentennial, the anniversary before America250?

The story behind the answer

Bruce N. Blackburn designed the official logo for the 1976 United States Bicentennial.

Blackburn was also a co-designer of NASA’s modernized insignia. For the Bicentennial, he created a logo featuring a white five-point star inside a stylized red, white, and blue star, surrounded by the words “American Revolution Bicentennial 1776–1976.”

The design appeared widely during the earlier national anniversary. It was used on flags, government facilities, souvenirs, and postage stamps, making it one of the most recognizable symbols of the 1970s celebration.

The Bicentennial logo is a useful comparison for America250 because the two anniversaries are separated by 50 years. The 1976 observance marked 200 years; the 2026 America250 observance marks 250 years.
