Who designed the Google logo used from 1999 to 2010?

The story behind the answer

Ruth Kedar designed the Google logo used from 1999 to 2010.

Kedar, an Israeli-American graphic designer and educator, created the logo after being introduced to Google co-founder Larry Page through a mutual Stanford connection. Her design used a clean wordmark with primary colors, plus the distinctive non-primary green L, giving the brand a playful but restrained appearance.

Google had already used several informal marks before Kedar’s work became the company’s recognizable identity. The logo changed in 2010, when Google simplified its lettering and adjusted the colors, although Kedar’s basic visual language remained influential. In 2015, Google introduced a new geometric sans-serif wordmark and the separate four-color G icon.

A common mix-up is crediting Sergey Brin or Larry Page for the logo itself. They co-founded Google, but Kedar is credited with designing this major version of its wordmark.
