Who designed the colonial drummer on the United States Bicentennial quarter?

The story behind the answer

Jack L. Ahr designed the colonial drummer on the United States Bicentennial quarter.

Ahr’s reverse design showed a colonial drummer beside a torch of victory surrounded by thirteen stars. The stars represented the original thirteen states, linking the coin’s imagery to the Revolutionary era and the country’s founding.

The United States Mint selected Ahr’s design in 1974 after a nationwide competition. Seth Huntington designed the Bicentennial half dollar’s Independence Hall image, while Dennis R. Williams designed the dollar’s Liberty Bell and Moon motif.

Frank Gasparro, the Mint’s chief engraver, made technical and artistic modifications to all three winning designs before production. Because of that, Ahr is credited as the designer, while Gasparro also played an important role in preparing the final coin dies.
