Bruce Blackburn designed the American Revolution Bicentennial logo used during the 1976 U.S. celebrations.
Blackburn created a stylized red, white, and blue star for the bicentennial. The design included a white five-point star inside a larger star and was surrounded by the words “American Revolution Bicentennial 1776–1976.”
The symbol became highly visible across the country. It appeared on government materials, flags, products, postage stamps, and other objects associated with the anniversary. NASA even displayed the emblem on the Vehicle Assembly Building at the Kennedy Space Center during 1976.
Blackburn is also known for co-designing NASA’s “worm” logotype with Richard Danne. That connection can cause confusion, because Danne was Blackburn’s partner on the NASA project, while Blackburn alone is credited with the bicentennial symbol.
