Who designed the Air Jordan 1 for Nike?

The story behind the answer

Peter Moore designed the Air Jordan 1 for Nike.

Moore was a Nike creative director and designer when the company developed its first signature basketball shoe for Michael Jordan. The Air Jordan 1 debuted during the 1985 basketball season and combined a high-top silhouette with bold color blocking and the original Wings logo.

The shoe’s design is distinct from later Jordan models. Tinker Hatfield became especially important to the Air Jordan line beginning with the Air Jordan III, while Moore is credited with the original model. This distinction is a common source of confusion because several influential designers shaped the broader Jordan Brand history.

The Air Jordan 1 was initially marketed as a Nike basketball shoe, before Jordan Brand became a separate division in 1997. Its later influence extended beyond basketball into fashion, collecting, and sneaker culture.
