Who designed Princess Diana’s ivory wedding dress worn at her 1981 wedding?

The story behind the answer

David and Elizabeth Emanuel designed Princess Diana’s ivory wedding dress worn at her 1981 wedding.

The Emanuels created the dress for Diana’s marriage to Charles, Prince of Wales, at St Paul’s Cathedral in London on 29 July 1981. The dramatic ivory taffeta gown featured puffed sleeves, a fitted bodice, a large skirt, lace details, and a train reported to be 25 feet long. Its scale made it one of the most widely discussed royal wedding dresses of the twentieth century.

The designers worked closely with Diana while keeping the project secret from the public. The dress was accompanied by a veil and a small horseshoe-shaped good-luck detail sewn into the garment.

This question concerns Diana’s wedding dress, not her later black evening “revenge dress.” That 1994 outfit was designed by Christina Stambolian and is a separate, often-confused fashion moment.
