Who designed Nike’s famous Swoosh logo in 1971?
Answer
Carolyn Davidson
Answer
Carolyn Davidson
Nike’s famous Swoosh logo was designed by Carolyn Davidson in 1971.
Davidson was a graphic-design student at Portland State University when she was hired by Phil Knight, who was then building the sports company that became Nike. Knight reportedly wanted a mark suggesting movement and speed, and Davidson developed the curved check-like symbol. Nike paid her $35 for the original design.
The Swoosh was first used by Blue Ribbon Sports, Nike’s predecessor, and appeared with the company’s new Nike name when the brand launched in 1971. Its simple shape made it easy to reproduce on shoes, clothing, packaging, and advertisements.
A common mix-up is assuming that the Swoosh itself was named Nike. Nike is the company and the Greek goddess whose name inspired the brand; Swoosh is the popular name for the graphic symbol. Davidson later received additional recognition from Nike, including company stock and a diamond-and-gold Swoosh ring.
