Who designed Mewtwo for the Pokémon games?

The story behind the answer

Ken Sugimori designed Mewtwo for the Pokémon games. Sugimori was Game Freak’s design lead and helped establish the visual identity of the original Pokémon species.

Mewtwo first appeared in Pokémon Red and Blue, which were based on Japan’s earlier Red and Green games. In the story, Mewtwo is a genetically engineered Pokémon created from research involving Mew.

Mewtwo was one of the earliest Pokémon designs created, appearing before Pikachu’s design was finalized. Its tall, pale body, purple details, and long tail were intended to give it an unsettling, powerful appearance.

Mewtwo’s role is also distinct from Mew’s. Mew is the elusive Mythical Pokémon associated with the original Pokédex’s final number, while Mewtwo is its engineered counterpart and a major post-game challenge in the original games.
