Who designed Harley-Davidson’s Fat Boy motorcycle?

The story behind the answer

Willie G. Davidson and Louie Netz designed Harley-Davidson’s Fat Boy motorcycle.

The Fat Boy was introduced in 1990 as a Softail-based cruiser. Willie G. Davidson, Harley-Davidson’s longtime styling leader, worked with designer Louie Netz on the motorcycle’s distinctive appearance. Its broad proportions, solid cast wheels, and large fenders helped define the fat-custom style.

The model’s official designation was FLSTF. It used the Softail chassis, which concealed the rear suspension and preserved a rigid-frame visual effect. The first Fat Boy was offered in a distinctive silver finish that contributed to its memorable identity.

The Fat Boy is sometimes mistakenly credited solely to Willie G. Davidson, because he was the most publicly recognized styling figure at Harley-Davidson. Netz’s contribution is specifically associated with the design work. The model also became widely known through its appearance in Terminator 2, though that film connection is separate from its design history.
