Who defeated the Midianites with 300 men? Gideon defeated the Midianites with a deliberately tiny force of 300 Israelites, according to the Book of Judges.

Gideon began with thousands of troops, but the biblical account says God reduced the army so Israel would not claim that victory came from military strength. Fearful soldiers were sent home, and a test at the water left 300 men who lapped water from their hands.

Gideon divided the men into three companies and equipped them with trumpets, jars, and torches. At night, they blew the trumpets, smashed the jars, and revealed the lights, creating panic in the Midianite camp. The Midianites fled and turned on one another.

A common mix-up is confusing Gideon with Samson or David, other famous Israelite warriors. Gideon is also called Jerubbaal and served as a judge of Israel. The story appears mainly in Judges 6–8, with the 300-man battle described in Judges 7.
