Who created the television drama House, M.D.?

The story behind the answer

David Shore created the television drama House, M.D. Shore developed the series around a physician whose exceptional diagnostic ability contrasts with his difficult personality and unconventional methods.

Before House, Shore worked as a writer and producer on television programs including Due South and The Practice. For House, he drew inspiration from medical mystery writing and from the idea that solving a case could resemble solving a puzzle. The character’s name and methods also deliberately echo Sherlock Holmes in several ways.

Shore served as an executive producer and remained closely involved with the show’s writing and creative direction. The series premiered on Fox in 2004 and became one of the network’s major international successes.

Bryan Singer directed the pilot and was an important executive producer, while Katie Jacobs was also central to the production. Those roles can cause confusion, but Shore is the show’s creator and the person most specifically credited with creating House, M.D.
