Who created the Ruby programming language?

The story behind the answer

Yukihiro Matsumoto created the Ruby programming language.

Matsumoto, commonly known as “Matz,” began designing Ruby in Japan in 1993. He wanted a language that combined useful features from several earlier languages while remaining enjoyable and natural to write. Ruby’s design drew inspiration from languages including Perl, Smalltalk, Eiffel, Ada, and Lisp.

Ruby was publicly released in Japan in 1995. It became much more internationally prominent after the release of Ruby on Rails, a web application framework created by David Heinemeier Hansson. Ruby and Ruby on Rails are related but are not the same thing: Ruby is the language, while Rails is a framework built with it.

Ruby is object-oriented and emphasizes programmer productivity. Its syntax permits multiple expressive ways to accomplish common tasks, which contributed to its popularity in web development and scripting.
