Who created the Disney comic-strip stories featuring Mickey Mouse for more than 45 years?

Floyd Gottfredson created and drew Mickey Mouse comic-strip stories for more than 45 years.

Gottfredson joined the Disney studio in 1929 and soon took over the daily Mickey Mouse newspaper strip. Although he initially expected the assignment to be temporary, he remained its principal creative force from 1930 until his retirement in 1975.

His strips developed Mickey beyond short cartoon comedy, placing him in longer adventure stories with recurring characters and mysteries. Gottfredson also helped establish enduring comic-strip versions of characters such as Pluto, Goofy, and the Phantom Blot.

The first Mickey Mouse newspaper strip launched in 1930, but its earliest installments were written by Walt Disney and drawn by Ub Iwerks and later artists. Gottfredson’s long tenure is why he is especially associated with Mickey’s classic newspaper-comic adventures. Carl Barks is instead strongly associated with Donald Duck and Scrooge McDuck comics.
