Who created the cover art for The Who's 2019 album 'Who'?
Answer
Peter Blake
Answer
Peter Blake
Peter Blake created the cover art for The Who's 2019 album Who. The celebrated British pop artist had already worked with the band on the Face Dances sleeve, making him a natural choice for another major Who release.
The cover is designed as a colorful patchwork of 25 squares. Three central squares spell “WHO,” while the surrounding images reference the band's history, influences and visual symbols. Among them are a red London bus, baked beans, a Royal Air Force roundel, a scooter, a pinball machine, Batman and Robin, and portraits or images associated with the group's career.
The design also invites comparisons with Blake's best-known work on The Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, though the two sleeves are conceptually different. Richard Hamilton is another plausible distractor because he designed the cover of The Who's 1967 album The Who Sell Out. Storm Thorgerson, meanwhile, was associated with Pink Floyd and other rock acts rather than this Who album.
