Who created the 1992 documentary television series Pandora’s Box?

The story behind the answer

Adam Curtis created the 1992 documentary television series Pandora’s Box.

Pandora’s Box is a six-part British documentary series written and directed by Adam Curtis. It examines the political and intellectual history of attempts to use technical, economic, and scientific systems to manage society. The series argues that efforts promising rational control can produce unexpected consequences.

The programmes cover subjects including Soviet planning, nuclear strategy, cybernetics, and economic policy. Its title invokes the Pandora myth because the series repeatedly asks what happens when institutions open powerful systems without fully understanding their effects. The episodes combine archive footage, interviews, narration, and historical analysis.

The series was broadcast by the BBC in 1992 and helped establish Curtis’s distinctive documentary style. It should not be confused with the 1929 German film Pandora’s Box, the 2016 South Korean disaster film Pandora, or later books using the same phrase. Curtis later made documentary series including The Century of the Self and HyperNormalisation.
