Who composed the theme song “Teardrop” used for House M.D.’s opening credits?

The story behind the answer

Massive Attack composed and recorded “Teardrop,” the song used for House M.D.’s opening credits.

“Teardrop” was released by the English trip-hop group Massive Attack in 1998. Elizabeth Fraser of the Cocteau Twins provided the song’s lead vocals, giving the track its distinctive atmospheric sound.

The song became strongly associated with House M.D. because the series used it during its opening title sequence in many markets and episodes. Its lyrics and hypnotic arrangement helped establish the show’s cerebral, tense mood, although some international broadcasts used alternate music because of licensing arrangements.

The song is sometimes incorrectly attributed to Portishead or another alternative act because of its trip-hop style. The performing artist credited for “Teardrop” is Massive Attack, not the series’ composer or cast.
