Who composed the Seinfeld theme music?
Answer
Jonathan Wolff
Answer
Jonathan Wolff
Jonathan Wolff composed the Seinfeld theme music.
Wolff’s signature theme is built around an unusual slap-bass sound, with short rhythmic phrases that change from episode to episode. Rather than functioning like a conventional melody, the music punctuates Jerry Seinfeld’s opening and closing stand-up routines and helps give the series its spare, distinctive identity.
A common mix-up concerns the pilot, “The Seinfeld Chronicles.” Its original broadcast used music by Jep Epstein, but that tune was replaced by Wolff’s composition when the series was picked up and the pilot was rerun. For the regular series, Wolff is the canonical theme composer.
Wolff went on to compose music for many other television programs, including Will & Grace, The King of Queens, and Reba. The theme’s arrangement also varied over the show’s run, including changes associated with different broadcast and syndication versions, but its recognizable musical foundation remained Wolff’s.
