Who composed the original score for Mad Men?

The story behind the answer

David Carbonara composed the original score for Mad Men.

Carbonara wrote the series’ original dramatic music, which appears in transitions, endings, and other scenes alongside licensed period recordings. His work helped the show balance its 1960s setting with moments of anxiety, melancholy, romance, and professional tension.

He was involved with Mad Men from its development period and ultimately scored all seven seasons. Carbonara also produced several songs performed within the story, including “Babylon” and music associated with performances by characters played by Robert Morse and Jessica Paré.

The original score is different from the opening theme. The title sequence uses an edited portion of RJD2’s instrumental “A Beautiful Mine,” whereas Carbonara’s score is the show’s internally composed music. Mad Men – Original Score Vol. 1 was released on January 13, 2009, collecting examples of his work.
