Who composed the opera The Cunning Little Vixen?

The story behind the answer

Leoš Janáček composed the opera The Cunning Little Vixen.

Its Czech title is Příhody lišky Bystroušky, commonly translated as The Adventures of Vixen Sharp-Ears. The opera premiered at the National Theatre in Brno on 6 November 1924. Rudolf Těsnohlídek’s newspaper stories and illustrations inspired the original material.

The plot follows a young female fox, often called Bystrouška, who is captured by a forester, escapes, and builds an independent life in the forest. Human and animal characters mirror one another, allowing Janáček to explore freedom, aging, courtship, and the cycle of nature.

The opera’s tone shifts between comedy, lyricism, and philosophical reflection. The title character is not the same as a traditional fairy-tale trickster: her “cunning” reflects independence and adaptability rather than simple villainy. Janáček’s speech-inspired melodic style is central to the work’s distinctive sound.
