John Lunn composed the music for Downton Abbey. The Scottish composer wrote the television series’ original score, including its instantly recognisable opening theme, and continued shaping the show’s musical identity across all six series.

Lunn’s score uses piano, strings and orchestral colour to reflect both Downton’s grand setting and the private emotions of its characters. He drew inspiration from composers including Edward Elgar, Ralph Vaughan Williams and Gustav Holst, while deliberately avoiding music that sounded like a literal 1910s period piece.
