Koji Kondo composed the main theme music for Nintendo’s The Legend of Zelda series.
Kondo wrote the music for the original The Legend of Zelda and created the series’ memorable overworld theme. His work helped establish music as a defining part of Nintendo’s adventure games rather than merely background sound.
He also composed or supervised music for major Mario titles, including Super Mario Bros. and Super Mario 64. Kondo’s melodies are known for strong hooks, clear rhythmic identity, and close integration with gameplay.
Other composers later contributed to Zelda games, especially as the series’ soundtracks became larger and more orchestral. Even so, Koji Kondo is the composer most directly associated with the classic Zelda musical identity and its foundational themes.
