Who completed the first expedition to circumnavigate the Earth after Ferdinand Magellan was killed?

The story behind the answer

Juan Sebastián Elcano completed the first expedition to circumnavigate the Earth after Ferdinand Magellan was killed.

Magellan's Spanish-backed expedition left Seville in 1519 with five ships, seeking a westward route to the Spice Islands. Magellan reached the Pacific after passing through the strait now named for him, but he was killed at the Battle of Mactan in the Philippines on 27 April 1521. Leadership later passed through several commanders.

Elcano took command of the surviving ship Victoria and guided it westward across the Indian Ocean and around the Cape of Good Hope. Victoria returned to Sanlúcar de Barrameda on 6 September 1522, completing the voyage with 18 surviving crew members.

Magellan is often credited with the first circumnavigation because he initiated and led most of the expedition, but he did not finish it. Elcano was the expedition's captain when the first successful return was made.
