Who completed the first circumnavigation of Earth after Magellan died?
Answer
Juan Sebastián Elcano
Answer
Juan Sebastián Elcano
Juan Sebastián Elcano completed the first circumnavigation of Earth after Magellan died.
Elcano was a Basque sailor who took command of the Victoria, the only ship from Ferdinand Magellan's 1519–1522 expedition to return to Spain. Magellan was killed in the Philippines in 1521, so he did not complete the voyage himself. Elcano led the surviving crew across the Indian Ocean and around the Cape of Good Hope.
The Victoria reached Sanlúcar de Barrameda on 6 September 1522 and arrived in Seville two days later. Only 18 of the original expedition's roughly 270 men returned on the ship, making the voyage both a geographical milestone and a severe test of survival.
The expedition demonstrated in practice that Earth could be circumnavigated by sea and provided important evidence about the scale of the planet. Some sources describe Magellan's expedition as the first circumnavigation, but Elcano was the commander who completed it.
