Who completed the first circumnavigation of Earth after Ferdinand Magellan was killed?

The story behind the answer

Juan Sebastián Elcano completed the first circumnavigation of Earth after Ferdinand Magellan was killed.

Magellan’s Spanish expedition began in 1519 with five ships seeking a westward route to the Spice Islands. Magellan was killed in the Philippines in 1521, before the voyage was complete. Elcano, a Basque mariner, later took command of the remaining ship, Victoria.

Victoria reached Spain in September 1522 with 18 surviving crew members, completing the first recorded circumnavigation. The expedition demonstrated in practice the global scale of Earth and the connectedness of its oceans, although it was not originally planned as a voyage to prove the planet was spherical.

The voyage is often called the Magellan–Elcano circumnavigation because Magellan initiated it but Elcano finished it. The journey also exposed the effects of crossing the International Date Line: the returning crew believed they had lost a day.
