Juan Sebastián Elcano completed the first circumnavigation of Earth after Ferdinand Magellan died during the voyage.

Magellan's expedition left Spain in 1519 with five ships seeking a westward route to the Spice Islands. Magellan was killed in the Philippines in 1521, during the Battle of Mactan. Elcano, a Basque mariner from Getaria, later took command of the surviving ship, Victoria.

Victoria crossed the Indian Ocean, rounded the Cape of Good Hope, and reached Sanlúcar de Barrameda on 6 September 1522. It arrived with 18 surviving crew members, completing the first circumnavigation known to history. The expedition had demonstrated in practice the global scale of the oceans, although its original commander did not finish the voyage.

Magellan's name is often attached to the expedition, so he is sometimes mistakenly called the first person to circumnavigate Earth. Elcano received a coat of arms bearing a globe and the motto “Primus circumdedisti me,” meaning “You were the first to go around me.”
