Who completed and edited many of J.R.R. Tolkien’s posthumously published Middle-earth works?

The story behind the answer

Christopher Tolkien completed and edited many of J.R.R. Tolkien’s posthumously published Middle-earth works.

Christopher was Tolkien’s third child and a scholar of his father’s papers. After J.R.R. Tolkien died in 1973, Christopher edited The Silmarillion, which was published in 1977, and later prepared extensive material for books such as Unfinished Tales and The History of Middle-earth.

These publications were assembled from drafts, notes, variant texts, and unfinished narratives rather than from a single completed manuscript. Christopher therefore had to make editorial decisions about arrangement and presentation. His work made a large portion of Tolkien’s mythology available to readers, while also showing how often Tolkien revised names, genealogies, languages, and stories.
