Who commanded the Confederate Second Corps at Gettysburg?

Richard S. Ewell commanded the Confederate Second Corps at the Battle of Gettysburg.

Ewell had succeeded Thomas J. “Stonewall” Jackson as one of the Army of Northern Virginia's senior corps commanders after Jackson's death in May 1863. Ewell's Second Corps included the divisions of Jubal A. Early, Robert E. Rodes, and Edward “Allegheny” Johnson.

At Gettysburg, Ewell's troops played a major role on the first day, when they helped drive Union forces through the town. On July 2, his corps attacked the Union positions at Culp's Hill and East Cemetery Hill, although those assaults failed to capture and hold the heights.

The wrong options represent other prominent Confederate commanders. Jubal Early commanded a division within Ewell's corps, while A. P. Hill commanded the Third Corps and James Longstreet commanded the First Corps. Ewell remained in command during the battle, making his name the single canonical answer.
