Who commanded the Apollo 11 mission and became the first person to walk on the Moon?

The story behind the answer

Neil Armstrong commanded Apollo 11 and became the first person to walk on the Moon.

Apollo 11 launched from Florida on July 16, 1969, carrying Armstrong, lunar module pilot Buzz Aldrin, and command module pilot Michael Collins. Armstrong and Aldrin landed the lunar module Eagle in the Moon’s Sea of Tranquility on July 20, while Collins remained in lunar orbit.

Armstrong stepped onto the lunar surface shortly after the landing, followed by Aldrin. The astronauts collected rock and soil samples, photographed the area, deployed scientific instruments, and spent more than two hours outside the lunar module.

The mission fulfilled President John F. Kennedy’s goal of landing a person on the Moon and returning them safely to Earth before the end of the 1960s. Apollo 11 splashed down in the Pacific Ocean on July 24, 1969, after completing the first crewed lunar landing.
