Who commanded Apollo 11’s lunar landing mission in 1969?

The story behind the answer

Neil Armstrong commanded Apollo 11’s lunar landing mission in 1969.

Apollo 11 launched from Kennedy Space Center in Florida on 16 July 1969 with Armstrong, lunar module pilot Buzz Aldrin, and command module pilot Michael Collins. Armstrong and Aldrin descended to the lunar surface in the module Eagle, while Collins remained in lunar orbit aboard Columbia.

Armstrong became the first person to step onto the Moon on 20 July 1969, followed shortly afterward by Aldrin. The astronauts collected lunar samples, deployed scientific instruments, and photographed the landing site before returning safely to Earth on 24 July.

A common mix-up is to name Aldrin, who was the second person on the Moon, or Collins, who piloted the orbiting command module. Apollo 11 was the first crewed mission to land humans on the lunar surface.
