Who commanded Apollo 11 when humans first landed on the Moon?

The story behind the answer

Neil Armstrong commanded Apollo 11 when humans first landed on the Moon.

Armstrong became the first person to step onto the lunar surface on 20 July 1969. He and lunar module pilot Buzz Aldrin descended in the spacecraft Eagle, while command module pilot Michael Collins remained in lunar orbit aboard Columbia.

The mission launched from Kennedy Space Center in Florida on 16 July 1969 and returned to Earth on 24 July. Armstrong's first step and the mission's successful return fulfilled a major goal announced by U.S. President John F. Kennedy in 1961.

Buzz Aldrin was the second person to walk on the Moon, so his name is the most common alternative in this question. Michael Collins was essential to the mission but never descended to the lunar surface.
