Who collected and popularized the Christmas carol 'I Wonder as I Wander'?

The story behind the answer

John Jacob Niles collected and popularized the Christmas carol “I Wonder as I Wander.”

Niles encountered the song’s melodic and lyrical fragment in Murphy, North Carolina, in July 1933. He heard Annie Morgan, a young traveling evangelist, sing the fragment repeatedly and used it as the foundation for the carol known today.

Niles expanded the fragment into a complete three-stanza composition, finishing it on October 4, 1933. He first performed it at the John C. Campbell Folk School in Brasstown, North Carolina, on December 19 of that year. The song appeared in his 1934 collection Songs of the Hill-Folk.

A common mix-up is calling the carol purely anonymous or entirely traditional. Niles presented it as a collected Appalachian song, but later accounts and scholarship emphasize that he substantially reshaped—and possibly largely composed—the familiar text and melody. His version, rather than the original fragment, became widely known through later singers and arrangements.
