Ada Lovelace collaborated with Charles Babbage on the Analytical Engine. Babbage designed the machine, while Lovelace studied its possibilities and explained how it could be instructed to perform complex operations.

The two first met in 1833, when Lovelace was introduced to Babbage’s Difference Engine. She became fascinated by his mechanical calculating machines and later developed a close intellectual correspondence with him. Babbage recognized her mathematical ability and called her the “enchantress of numbers.”

In 1843, Lovelace translated an article by Luigi Federico Menabrea about the Analytical Engine and added notes roughly three times longer than the original article. Those notes included an algorithm for Bernoulli numbers and argued that the machine could manipulate symbols, music, and other forms of information—not merely perform arithmetic. Babbage supplied technical guidance, but Lovelace’s interpretation helped reveal the broader conceptual potential of programmable computing.
