Who coached the San Francisco 49ers in a blowout win in Super Bowl XXIV?
Answer
George Seifert
Answer
George Seifert
George Seifert coached the San Francisco 49ers in their 55–10 blowout of the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XXIV.
The game was played on January 28, 1990, at the Louisiana Superdome in New Orleans. San Francisco led 27–3 at halftime and continued pulling away, producing the largest margin of victory in Super Bowl history at the time—and still the competition’s most lopsided result.
Seifert was in his first season as an NFL head coach. He had succeeded Bill Walsh, who retired after Super Bowl XXIII, but inherited a powerful team led by quarterback Joe Montana, wide receiver Jerry Rice, and a dominant defense. Montana won Super Bowl MVP after throwing for 297 yards and five touchdowns.
A common mix-up is crediting Walsh because he built the 49ers dynasty and coached their previous championship. Walsh was no longer the head coach for Super Bowl XXIV; Seifert was the coach who led San Francisco to its second consecutive title.
