Stamp and Lambert met while working as assistant directors in the film industry. They encountered The Who when the band was still known as the High Numbers and initially intended to make a documentary about a contemporary rock group. Instead, they took over management, encouraged the musicians’ visual and theatrical identity, and helped guide their early career.

The partnership also extended into production and record-company work. Stamp and Lambert founded Track Records in 1967, signing artists including Jimi Hendrix and The Crazy World of Arthur Brown. Their association with The Who later became strained by financial and personal disputes, and the band eventually replaced them with Bill Curbishley. The common mistake is to credit Lambert alone: Stamp was his essential business partner.
