The pair first built Zimride in 2007, a carpooling service aimed largely at long-distance trips between college campuses. Green’s interest in shared transportation grew from seeing carpool networks in Zimbabwe and from his experience traveling between the University of California, Santa Barbara, and Los Angeles. Zimmer, meanwhile, had been inspired by empty seats during trips home from Cornell University.

Lyft emerged from Zimride in 2012, initially as a more immediate, app-based alternative to traditional taxis. The company adopted the Lyft name in 2013 and sold the original Zimride business to Enterprise Holdings. A common mix-up is confusing Lyft’s founders with those of Uber: Garrett Camp and Travis Kalanick are associated with Uber, not Lyft.

Green later served as Lyft’s CEO and chairman, while Zimmer became its president. Both eventually stepped back from day-to-day leadership, but their partnership established the company’s original ridesharing model.
