Who co-directed Disney's 1992 Aladdin?

The story behind the answer

Disney's 1992 Aladdin was co-directed by John Musker and Ron Clements.

Musker and Clements were major figures of Disney's Renaissance era. They joined the Aladdin project after the studio offered them several possible productions, and they chose the Arabian Nights-inspired musical over early versions of projects that later became Swan Lake and The Lion King. They also co-wrote the screenplay with Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio.

The directors helped reshape the film after an early story reel failed to satisfy studio chief Jeffrey Katzenberg. The rewrite strengthened Aladdin's personality, emphasized Jasmine's independence, removed Aladdin's mother, and made the story move more quickly toward the lamp, the Genie, and Jafar's takeover attempt.

Musker and Clements are sometimes confused with the film's producer credits or with its prominent creative collaborators. Alan Menken wrote the music, while Howard Ashman and Tim Rice supplied lyrics for the songs. Jeffrey Katzenberg was a Disney executive, not a director, and Roy E. Disney was a company leader rather than one of the film's co-directors. Musker and Clements later directed other Disney features, including Hercules and The Princess and the Frog.
