Who challenges Beowulf by recalling his swimming contest with Breca?

The story behind the answer

Unferth challenges Beowulf by recalling his swimming contest with Breca. He raises the episode during a feast in Hrothgar’s hall, using it to portray Beowulf as reckless and overconfident before the hero faces Grendel.

Unferth is a Danish courtier and thegn seated among Hrothgar’s retainers. His role is more than simple hostility: as a sharp-tongued speaker, he forces Beowulf to defend his reputation publicly. Unferth claims that Beowulf lost the contest because he accepted an ill-advised challenge against Breca in the open sea.

Beowulf answers with his own version. He says that he and Breca remained at sea for seven days and nights, and that sea monsters dragged him beneath the waves. Beowulf claims to have killed nine such creatures before currents carried him to shore. His response transforms Unferth’s accusation into another display of heroic endurance.

The exchange also prepares readers for Unferth’s later change in attitude. Although he cannot face Grendel’s mother himself, he lends Beowulf the sword Hrunting. Their quarrel therefore becomes part of a larger movement from jealousy and verbal challenge toward reluctant respect.
