Who captained the USS Enterprise in the original Star Trek series?

The story behind the answer

James T. Kirk captained the USS Enterprise in the original Star Trek series. Played by William Shatner, Kirk was the ship’s commanding officer during the five-year exploration mission depicted across Star Trek: The Original Series, which aired from 1966 to 1969.

Kirk is portrayed as a bold, decisive captain who often balances Starfleet regulations against the needs of his crew and the larger mission. His closest professional relationships were with first officer and science officer Spock and chief medical officer Leonard “Bones” McCoy. Their contrasting logic, emotion, and instinct formed the central leadership dynamic of the series.

The original series was not the first Star Trek production to feature a captain named Kirk. The earlier pilot “The Cage” starred Christopher Pike as the Enterprise’s commander. Kirk replaced Pike in the second pilot, “Where No Man Has Gone Before,” which led to the broadcast series.

A common mix-up is identifying Spock as captain because he frequently commands the ship when Kirk is absent. Spock was normally the first officer, while Kirk held the captaincy during the original series.
