Ernie Els captained the International team against Tiger Woods’ U.S. team at the 2019 Presidents Cup.
The event was played at Royal Melbourne Golf Club in Australia from December 12–15, 2019. Els served as the International captain, while Woods became the first playing captain since Hale Irwin in 1994. Woods selected himself as a captain’s pick and competed while leading the American team.
The Presidents Cup is a biennial match-play competition between a United States team and an International team made up of players from countries outside Europe. Els’s side led entering Sunday singles, but the United States rallied to win 16–14. Woods contributed three points and finished the week unbeaten at 3–0–0.
A common mix-up is confusing Els with other prominent International players or former captains such as Adam Scott, Greg Norman and Nick Price. Scott played for the International team in 2019, but Els was the captain.
