Who built the first successful cotton mill in the United States?

The story behind the answer

Samuel Slater built the first successful cotton mill in the United States.

Slater was an English textile apprentice who had learned the operation of water frames and other machinery in Derbyshire. British authorities restricted the export of textile technology, so when Slater emigrated to the United States in 1789, he relied heavily on his memory and practical experience rather than carrying drawings or machines with him.

Working with Moses Brown, William Almy, and local mechanics, Slater recreated British spinning machinery in Pawtucket, Rhode Island. Their first equipment began operating in the early 1790s, and the Slater Mill opened in 1793. It used water power and the Arkwright system to produce cotton yarn continuously, making it the first successful water-powered roller-spinning mill in America.

Slater became known as the “Father of the American Factory System.” The mill helped establish New England’s textile industry, although its labor system relied heavily on families and child workers. Eli Whitney’s cotton gin later expanded the supply of short-staple cotton that fed many American mills.
