Who become the first Major League Soccer player to score 20 or more goals in three different seasons?

The story behind the answer

Bradley Wright-Phillips became the first Major League Soccer player to score 20 or more goals in three different seasons.

The New York Red Bulls striker reached the milestone by scoring his 20th regular-season goal of 2018 against the San Jose Earthquakes on October 6. His earlier 20-goal seasons were 2014, when he scored 27 goals, and 2016, when he scored 24. His 2018 total finished at 20.

The record was a notable extension of Wright-Phillips’s earlier achievement: in 2016, he had become the first MLS player to record two separate 20-goal regular seasons. His 2018 campaign made him the first to do it three times, despite scoring only 17 goals in 2017.

This record concerns MLS regular-season goals, not combined regular-season and playoff totals. Wright-Phillips, an English forward and the son of former England international Ian Wright, became one of the league’s defining scorers during his seven seasons with the Red Bulls.
