Ben McAdoo became the New York Giants’ offensive coordinator during the 2014 offseason. He joined head coach Tom Coughlin’s staff after Kevin Gilbride, the team’s longtime offensive coordinator, retired following the 2013 season.
McAdoo arrived in New York after coaching quarterbacks for the Green Bay Packers. His West Coast-influenced offense helped the Giants improve in his first season: New York moved from 28th in the NFL in scoring in 2013 to 13th in 2014. The team’s offense featured quarterback Eli Manning, wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. and running back Rashad Jennings, with Beckham becoming an immediate star as a rookie.
The Giants retained McAdoo as offensive coordinator for the 2015 season, when the offense ranked sixth in scoring despite significant injuries. His success in the role led New York to promote him to head coach in January 2016. McAdoo became the franchise’s 17th head coach and guided the Giants to the playoffs in his first season. The wording can cause confusion because he later held the head-coaching job, but in 2014 his title was offensive coordinator.
