Who became the first woman to win the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences in 2009?

The story behind the answer

Elinor Ostrom became the first woman to win the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences in 2009.

Ostrom shared the award with Oliver E. Williamson. The committee recognized her analysis of economic governance, especially her research showing how common resources can be managed successfully by users themselves rather than only by governments or private firms.

Her fieldwork examined fisheries, forests, irrigation systems, and grazing lands in different parts of the world. She identified recurring design principles in durable commons institutions, including clearly defined boundaries, locally appropriate rules, monitoring, and graduated sanctions.

Ostrom was a political scientist, not an economist by conventional disciplinary training, and she was affiliated with Indiana University. Her work challenged the assumption that shared resources inevitably collapse through overuse. She remained the only woman economics laureate until Esther Duflo won in 2019.
